Alpha is Telefónica’s big bets innovation company. Telefónica is a telephone company with 320 million customers which operates in Europe (UK, Spain, Germany) and in Latin America. Alpha, with a solid backing, and access to massive data sets is building a team to work on groundbreaking and life changing projects and products in the health sector.
Worldwide, healthcare costs have been increasing faster than GDP for 50 years, whilst key indicators such as life expectancy have plateaued in many countries. The root cause is a change in disease burden – across the world, today’s biggest diseases and biggest killers are chronic diseases such as cancer, heart attack, stroke, and mental health disorders. In fact, for every life saved from infections since 2000, we’ve lost two lives to chronic disease.
However, it’s now well-established that the main cause of chronic diseases is everyday behaviours such as poor diet, lack of exercise, using tobacco, excessive alcohol, or lack of sleep. In 2008 the official leading cause of death in the US became personal choices; yet healthcare systems today are simply not designed to help people change these root causes of chronic disease. To make tackling everyday behaviours even harder, pioneers in neuroscience and behavioural economics have begun to reveal that people are not even really in conscious control of their behaviour. We’re learning that attention is such a scarce resource that we make many decisions – big and small – using automatic (and unconscious) processes. It appears that the best way to tackle chronic disease is to help people optimise their happiness – using the basic drive for happiness to steer everyday behaviours.
At Alpha, we believe that advances in neuroscience, mobile computing, and machine learning now mean we can help people to take control of their own behaviour, optimise their life, and limit the effects of unhealthy behaviour on their bodies and their minds.
We believe that doing this will help people to manage and prevent a range of chronic diseases and help make personal changes that will improve their satisfaction with their life. To achieve this, we are using cutting-edge digital insights and the smart, real-time interpretation of data to develop targeted tools, built around each user.
Of course, we recognize the myriad challenges involved in this work. We are working systematically with our team of diverse minds in science, engineering and design to build breakthrough solutions to meet these challenges head-on. To support our work, we are partnering with the best academics, developers, companies, and professionals around the world.
Our offices are in an iconic building located right by the Mediterranean Sea and close to the vibrant innovation and start-up business area of Barcelona.
The strategy team in Alpha Health supports the Health Moonshot CEO to develop and evolve a vision and strategy that is commensurate with our ambitions as a moonshot. The strategy team works closely with all other parts of Alpha Health - product, engineering, research - to help translate this vision into delivery, and to ensure that the strategy is refreshed as we test our hypotheses through research, prototypes, and products.
In addition to leading strategic thinking, the strategy team also has responsibility for: building and establishing partnerships; testing and establishing innovative business models; testing and establishing an ethical framework to provide the firmest possible foundation of trust; and planning for an ecosystem that can facilitate impact on a global scale.
A significant theme that cuts across these responsibilities is Alpha Health’s efforts to harness the power of neuroscience, psychiatry, behavioural economics, and other, related, disciplines. This involves developing a research strategy that pushes at the boundaries of the possible; establishing and maintaining partnerships with world-leading institutions; and developing a research and development platform that enables us to more rapidly bring research results to market as compelling tools that help our users meet their goals.
We are looking for a Strategy Manager to drive Alpha Health’s efforts to harness the power of neuroscience and related disciplines, lead the strategy for building a research and development platform, and support the continued development and evolution of the Alpha Health strategy.
- Day-to-day responsibility for the Alpha Health research strategy - working to the Strategy Director and Head of Research
- Ensure that there is a coherent and up-to-day research strategy, which fully aligns to the overall Alpha Health Strategy
- Horizon scan for research challenges and opportunities that could become part of our research strategy
- Engage and manage Alpha Health’s research stakeholders
- Lead the contracting process for research partnerships
- Day-to-day responsibility for Research & Development (R&D) Platform strategy:
- Manage and maintain coherence to the overall research strategy, and to the overall Alpha Health strategy
- Develop the commercial model for the R&D Platform
- Develop clear hypotheses to test for the MVP of the R&D Platform
- Build an initial cohort of researchers to act as beta testers for the R&D Platform
- Work closely with the Research Platform Product Manager to deliver all of the above
- Support for the ongoing development of the Alpha Health strategy:
- Refreshing the vision, mission, and plan
- Developing our commercial approach
- Designing and implementing our ethical framework
- Refreshing our partnership strategy and establishing and sustaining a wide range of partnerships
Our offices are literally on the beach in Barcelona and the views across the city and the see are great. Barcelona is known for its good food, architecture and weather.
As most of us are not from Spain, we know that some help is needed with moving and getting a Visa. We will support you with that process (and your family).
We are looking for someone with 5+ years experience in creating and delivering high-impact strategies. You will have worked for a top-tier consultancy, or corporate strategy function, or a central strategic policy function in government, or other roles which similarly have to create compelling solutions to complex problems.
In addition, we are looking for someone with at least a PhD in one of our core scientific disciplines: neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and behavioural economics. You will have a demonstrable interest and familiarity with human decision-making and behaviour.
Your skills and expertise
We are seeking an exceptional strategic thinker. You will understand how to take a complex problem and break it down into discrete, well-structured parts, and how to turn these into testable hypotheses. You are creative in developing solutions to complex problems, drawing analogous problems in other sectors to propose novel approaches.
You will be comfortable working with uncertainty. Indeed, you will see it as part of your role to reduce such uncertainty, helping to create an atmosphere that can channel uncertainty into problem solving.
You will have significant experience in leading teams to attain the vision for a company, programme, or team; both formally and informally. You will be comfortable working in a diverse team, with a mix of cultures and disciplines, and have a demonstrable ability to build shared understanding and a creative, problem-solving atmosphere. You will be a self-starter and safe pair of hands, escalating issues as required, but driving for impact as you go.
We are seeking someone who has deep expertise in at least one of our core scientific disciplines: neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and behavioural economics. In addition, you will be comfortable working outside of your discipline, able to draw together seemingly distinct threads, and unafraid to challenge conventional thinking.
As we are testing in various countries, high level of written and spoken level of English is required, Spanish, very highly valued. Portuguese and German is a plus.
